Why Are You A Massage Therapist?

Have you wondered why some people become massage therapists?

Surveys report most therapists get into the massage industry as a result of personal experience from massage. One common story is the therapist had some type of injury or physical problem and massage helped heal them.  After receiving the benefit of massage first hand, many decide they want to be apart of this field.

Usually you find therapists who are passionate about massage because they know personally the power of massage.

Are all massage therapists passionate about their work? The answer of course is no.  I think in any industry we find people who lack joy in their job. One reason some people have gotten into to massage, is because of the growing advertising promoting massage in schools.  Education is a business.  Schools make money when they enroll students in their programs.  A few  years ago, it was common to see schools promoting massage careers on TV.  I recall one commercial, where the graduating student had a portable massage table, she happily slid the table in her car while the narrator reported she worked part time hours a few days a week. She was carefree and happy as the commercial shared she had lots of free time! They said  made over $30,000.00 a year for part time work.

It does sound like a dream job, when you see these easy, carefree commercials!  Unfortunately some people go into the field for easy schedule and easy money.  Now, it is not bad to work smart.  However, as a result of students not understanding the whole industry, many students start a career in massage, only to quit within the first year.  Massage is one of the highest turn over careers we have in the USA now.  They say over 80% of therapists quit within first 2 years.

If you are looking for a massage therapist, ask this simple question..."What made you want to become a massage therapist?"  ~ their answer can give you an idea if their passion is truly massage and helping people.

Balancing Touch Massage hopes potential students enroll in massage schools only if they really want to build a career helping people with emotional, physical and mental wellness!
